About XXO Art Residency at River’s View

Discover XXO Art Residency at River’s View — a peaceful artist retreat in Japan, located in the quiet countryside of Takashima, Shiga Prefecture.

Nestled along the river that leads to Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, our residency offers sweeping views of mountains, water, and open skies. It is a space designed for reflection, creation, and connection.

XXO Art Residency at River’s View is not a competitive program, but a gentle artist retreat where you can work at your own pace. It lives somewhere between a traditional artist residency and an extended creative stay, providing a supportive environment rooted in the natural rhythms of rural Japan.

Housed in a traditional Japanese home with modern comforts, the setting invites deep focus and intentional living. Each room is designed with simplicity and calm in mind. Whether you are painting in the sunlit studio, journaling in the garden, or taking quiet walks along the river, you are encouraged to find your own creative flow.

We welcome visual artists, writers, photographers, and multidisciplinary creators from around the world — anyone seeking time, space, and stillness to nurture their creative process in an inspiring setting.

who we are

XXO Artist Residency at River’s View is founded by Tyrus Lytton and Motoko Inoue, multidisciplinary artists who divide their time between the United States and Japan. Our vision was to create a space where creativity can breathe: unhurried, grounded, and deeply connected to nature.

With over 12 years of experience working in fine art, design, and public installations, we’ve come to value the quiet moments that lead to honest work. This residency is our way of sharing that space with others.

We don’t just host — we live and create here too, and we look forward to welcoming artists from around the world to experience this slow, intentional rhythm of life.

Tyrus holds a BFA from the University of Georgia and an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His practice spans painting, drawing, woodworking, and mixed media, with a focus on capturing emotional nuance and abstract realism. He is a founders of XXO Studio, a fine art studio specializing in custom work for hospitality, corporate, and private spaces.

Motoko was born and raised in Shiga, Japan and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Fabric Design from the University of Georgia. She also studied at the Kawashima Textile School, where she deepened her connection to traditional Japanese textile arts. Her work bridges cultural heritage and contemporary expression through installation and textile-based media.

Together, we’ve spent over a decade creating custom fine art for public and private spaces. The residency is a reflection of our shared belief in the power of quiet environments, natural beauty, and spacious time for the creative process to unfold.
